Among diverse lamp structures, most of them have been using Filament Type configuration. However, this structure requires high voltage for initial lighting, which in turn produces electric stress to the lamp, and as oxide of Ba or Ca is coated on the tungsten filament, UV discharging rate is to reduce drastically by the progression of use time and on/off frequency. Though we too have been producing this type of lamp until 1990, our company succeeded to develop a lamp with an enhanced structure through intensive R&D efforts for 2 years from 1988. This enhanced-structure lamp uses nickel for the main electrode, and generates UV rays by discharging in an Hg-vapor atmosphere made by accelerated electorn movement in the highly vacuumized space between electordes. In particular, as the electrodes of this structure are not coated with oxides, and there is space between + and - electrodes, no consumption arises from the discharging of electrons, thus enables a maximized life cycle of the lamp. And also, as this enhanced-structure lamp can be actuated without a ballast, there a considerable saving effects, in terms of production cost and reduction of defect ratio.
